Former Black Stars captain Asamoah Gyan has opened up on his historic achievement at the FIFA World Cup, describing it as a blessing while encouraging upcoming African talents to aim higher.

Gyan, who remains Africa’s all-time top scorer in World Cup history with six goals—netted against the Czech Republic (1), United States (1), Germany (1), Serbia (1), Australia (1), and Portugal (1)—made it clear that he does not see his record as untouchable.

“For me, records are set to be broken. So, personally I count myself lucky to be at that level, to score six goals in World Cup history. The only African to score six goals in World Cup history,” he stated.
The legendary striker emphasized that while his achievement is significant, football is constantly evolving, and new players have the potential to surpass his milestone.

“The record is there to be broken. So I wish this new generation well, to perform so well. One might come up and break the record.”

Gyan’s World Cup journey remains one of the most iconic in African football history, with unforgettable performances across multiple tournaments, including his standout displays at Germany 2006 (1 goal), South Africa 2010 (3 goals), and Brazil 2014 (2 goals).
His comments come at a time when a new wave of African forwards are making their mark on the global stage, raising hopes that his long-standing record could soon face a serious challenge.
Despite that, Gyan’s legacy as a trailblazer for Ghana and Africa remains firmly intact—setting the standard for future generations to chase and possibly surpass.
