The Government of Ghana has respectfully declined an offer by MTN Ghana to donate GHS20 million towards support for Ghanaian victims of the recent xenophobic attacks in South Africa.
In a press statement issued by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the government acknowledged and commended MTN Ghana for the proposed financial assistance but said it was unable to accept the offer because the Mahama Administration has already made adequate provision for the ongoing evacuation and reintegration of affected Ghanaians.
The Ministry said the government’s position had earlier been communicated directly to MTN’s Board Chairman and Chief Executive Officer when they paid a visit to the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, on August 14, 2026.
The government further assured that it remains fully committed to providing humanitarian evacuation and reintegration financial support to every Ghanaian brought back from harm’s way.
According to the Ministry, the government will provide the public with a comprehensive account of the total cost of the evacuation exercise once it is concluded, as part of efforts to ensure transparency and accountability.
The statement also stressed that the government remains committed to creating a favourable business environment for all international brands operating in Ghana, regardless of their country of origin.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs concluded by reaffirming that the welfare of all Ghanaians remains the government’s utmost priority.
