The Ghana Football Association (GFA) has officially parted ways with Winfried Schäfer, as the shake-up within the Black Stars technical team gathers momentum.
Schäfer, who was appointed in late 2024 as technical advisor, came in to support Otto Addo following Ghana’s disappointing failure to qualify for the AFCON 2025. His role was seen as crucial in strengthening the technical direction of the team, but his stay has now been cut short.
Sources indicate that his exit is directly linked to the recent dismissal of Otto Addo, with the FA keen on giving the incoming head coach full control over his technical bench. Reports suggest more members of the current backroom staff could also be shown the exit door in the coming days.
Meanwhile, the search for a new Black Stars head coach is nearing its final stages. High-profile names such as Slaven Bilić, Carlos Queiroz, and Fernando Santos are all understood to be in contention for the role.

Sports Minister Kofi Adams recently hinted that an official announcement is imminent, with Ghanaians expected to know the new coach within the coming week.
Whoever takes over the job will have very limited time to make an impact, with less than two months to prepare the team for the upcoming FIFA World Cup to be hosted across the United States, Mexico, and Canada.
Ghana has been drawn in a tough group alongside Panama, England, and Croatia. The Black Stars will kick off their campaign against Panama on June 17, before facing England and Croatia on June 23 and June 27 respectively.
With expectations high and time not on their side, the next coach will have a serious job on his hands to steady the ship and deliver results on the biggest stage.
