The Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) was thrown into turmoil on Saturday following a horrifying incident during the match between Katsina United and Barau FC, where Ghanaian midfielder Nana Kwame Abraham was viciously attacked by home fans after scoring an equaliser.

The chaos erupted at the Muhammadu Dikko Stadium after Barau FC drew level at 1–1 through Orji Kalu’s goal in the 69th minute. Moments later, furious Katsina supporters stormed the pitch, targeting Abraham, who had been instrumental in the buildup to the equaliser.

According to eyewitness accounts, the midfielder was caught and had his throat slit in a shocking act of violence that stunned the football community. Barau FC confirmed the incident via their official X (formerly Twitter) handle, stating that the match was immediately suspended following the attack.
Disturbing images circulating online showed Abraham bleeding heavily as teammates and officials rushed to his aid amid total confusion. Security personnel struggled to restore calm as panic spread across the stadium.

As of now, the NPFL management and Katsina United are yet to release an official statement regarding the incident. The tragedy has reignited national outrage over persistent fan violence and poor security measures at league centres, with growing calls for firm sanctions and comprehensive reforms.

This appalling act comes just weeks after violent scenes in Kano, further denting the reputation of the NPFL and intensifying concerns about player safety in Nigerian football.

However, latest reports indicate that Nana Kwame Abraham is alive and in stable condition despite the terrifying ordeal.
