The new Ghana Premier League season kicked off over the weekend, and Matchweek 1 did not disappoint as fans across the country witnessed drama, goals, and a fair share of stalemates.
The action began on Friday night at the Accra Sports Stadium where Hearts of Oak SC played out a frustrating goalless draw against newly-promoted Hohoe United. The Phobians dominated possession but failed to break down a resilient Hohoe defence.
Saturday’s fixtures brought the heat. In Berekum, Asante Kotoko made a strong statement by edging past Berekum Chelsea 1–0 at the Golden City Park. Over in Bibiani, Goldstars SC thrilled their home supporters with a 2–1 victory over Bechem United, making them early contenders to watch.
Sunday was packed with fixtures and plenty of talking points. At Kpando, Heart of Lions FC announced their return to the topflight in style with a narrow 1–0 win over Dreams FC, courtesy of a spirited display. Meanwhile, Basake Holy Stars and Eleven Wonders shared the spoils in a cagey 0–0 draw at the Nsekyire Sports Arena.
In Accra, newcomers Visions FC held their own against FC Samartex 1996, as the two sides ended goalless. In Dormaa, it was disappointment for Young Apostles FC, who were handed a reality check on their debut as defending champions Medeama SC cruised to a comfortable 2–0 win at the Nana Agyemang-Badu II Park.
Elsewhere, Karela United FC recorded a solid 1–0 win over giants Aduana Stars at the Aliu Mahama Sports Stadium. The weekend’s action closed in Kumasi, where Nations FC impressed their home fans with a 2–1 win against Swedru All Blacks at the Dr. Kwame Kyei Sports Complex.

Standings After Week 1
After the dust settled, Medeama SC sit at the summit of the table thanks to their superior goal difference. They are joined on three points by Bibiani Goldstars, Nations FC, Asante Kotoko, Heart of Lions, and Karela United, all of whom secured victories on opening weekend.
At the lower end, Young Apostles occupy the bottom spot after their heavy defeat, while Dreams FC, Berekum Chelsea, Aduana Stars, and Swedru All Blacks all failed to register points.
