Renowned Ghanaian musician and medical doctor, Knii Lante, has made a passionate appeal to the leaders of Osu Oxford Street to take urgent action in cleaning the area’s gutters to prevent the spread of cholera. Speaking on Daybreak Hitz with Doreen Avio earlier this morning, the award-winning artiste stressed the critical need for improved sanitation, especially in an area bustling with hospitals, food joints, and heavy pedestrian traffic.
Osu Oxford Street, one of Accra’s most vibrant and iconic locations, is known for its lively nightlife, restaurants, and commercial activities. However, Knii Lante warned that the unsanitary conditions of the gutters pose a serious health risk, particularly with the rainy season approaching. Cholera, a deadly waterborne disease, spreads rapidly in areas with poor sanitation, making this call to action even more urgent.
Beyond urging local authorities to act, Knii Lante suggested that the “Buss Top Guys”, a well-known group in the community, be mobilized to help with the cleanup efforts. According to him, a collective effort is needed to ensure the gutters are properly desilted, reducing the risk of contamination and disease outbreaks.
“We need to keep our environment clean, especially in places where food is sold and hospitals operate. If possible, let’s call on the Buss Top Guys to step in and help clean up before we have a full-blown health crisis on our hands.” – Knii Lante
The Osu community is home to thousands of residents and businesses, making this issue a matter of public safety. Knii Lante’s call is expected to stir conversation and, hopefully, prompt immediate action from both local authorities and the public.
Cholera outbreaks in Ghana have historically been linked to poor sanitation, contaminated water, and food. Given that Osu Oxford Street is a hub for restaurants and eateries, ensuring proper waste disposal and clean surroundings is non-negotiable. The presence of hospitals in the area also means that patients and healthcare workers could be at risk if the environment is not properly maintained.
Knii Lante’s advocacy is a timely reminder that health and hygiene should always come first. Will the leaders of Osu heed his call and take immediate action? Time will tell, but one thing is certain—prevention is always better than cure.
