PSG beats defending champions Lille 2-1

A dramatic affair at the Parc des Princes saw Paris Saint-Germain come from behind to defeat the defending Ligue 1 champions Lille OSC, whose disappointing tally of 15 points after 12 league games remains the third worst for a defending champion in Ligue 1 history.

Despite the Parisians boasting a star-studded attacking force, it was the defending Ligue 1 champions, Lille, who struck first in the high-flying first half. After burning past a PSG defender, Lille talisman Burak Yılmaz played a perfect square ball to his dynamic strike partner Jonathan David who tapped home to give the visitors a lead, with fifteen minutes to go in the first interval.

At the other end of the field, 'Les Dogues’ found no issues in dealing with the PSG attack, which featured the likes of Neymar and Lionel Messi, leaving Mauricio Pochettino with some problems to be solved as the two teams headed into the dressing rooms at halftime. Interestingly, his first move was to remove Lionel Messi from the match in place of the returning Mauro Icardi.

The risky maneuver from the PSG boss appeared to work as the home side would eventually level the proceedings 74 minutes into the match when Ángel Di Maria lofted a ball to the back post where Marquinhos was waiting to side-foot the ball into the back of the net, setting the Parc des Princes alight.

The turnaround would be completed just three minutes before full-time when Ángel Di Maria capped off a fantastic second-half performance by combining with Neymar to eventually send a forceful strike into the back of the net, snatching all three points from the hands of the champions at the death.

The victory snaps a two game winless streak against Lille for Mauricio Pochettino’s men in all competitions, and sees the PSG boss avoid going two consecutive matches without a win for the first time in his tenure.
