The Chosen Season 1 Episode 1 with subtitle “I Have Called You by Name”
Season 1 opens in Capernaum with a powerful scene showing Mary of Magdala, known in the streets as Lilith, tormented by demons and living a broken life. We also meet Simon and his brother Andrew, who are struggling to pay taxes owed to Rome, and Matthew the tax collector, who faces scorn from his own people for working for the Romans. Meanwhile Nicodemus, a respected Pharisee, is pressured by a Roman official to enforce law and help with difficult cases. Nicodemus attempts an exorcism on Lilith in the roughest part of town but fails, leaving him shaken in his faith. As her despair grows, Mary is on the brink of giving up—until Jesus appears, calls her by her real name, “Mary,” and speaks the words of Isaiah: “Fear not, for I have redeemed you; I have called you by name; you are mine.” This encounter brings her healing and marks her first encounter with Jesus on the series.
